Field Notes

Description:

A large mostly black woodpecker with black with bold white stripes down the neck and a flaming-red crest. Adult males have a red line from the bill to the throat; in adult females these are black. The southern subspecies are slightly smaller than the northern.

Habitat:

Spotted in an open deciduous forest along the Arkansas River.

Notes:

One of these woodpeckers' favorite foods is ants, especially carpenter ants. Pic 6 is cropped to show its long tongue.
