Tree Yellow ♀
Gandaca harina mindanaensis
14.16, 121.23
Field Notes
Description:
Gandaca harina (Horsfield, [1829]), family Pieridae, subfamily Coliadinae, is called the Tree Yellow. Gandaca harina mindanaensis Fruhstorfer, 1910 is the ssp existing in the Philippines excluding Basilan, Calamian, Palawan, Sulu archipelago.
Can be mistaken for a Eurema sp. but easily identified when it settled as its underside is entirely featureless. It is a common species of woodland and its edges, and can be seen drinking from the edges of streams and roadside seepages. Unlike the Eurema, it rarely congregates in large numbers. Although males are sometimes found aggregating with Eurema and other Pierids, they are more often found singly or in two's or three's, drinking from wet ground. Females are sometimes found nectaring at Lantana but spend most of their lives on the tree tops.
Habitat:
Makiling Botanic Gardens, a forest park of the Mt. Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (adjacent or within the UPLB-College of Forestry and Natural Resources), University of the Philippines at Los Baños, Laguna.
