Field Notes
Description:
Very small black fly that flies after emerging from its hole in a piece of alder wood. The wing covers don't appear very hard, and aren't shiny. The insect emerges head first over a period of days, and many of them seem not to survive (spiders hang close by). Those that do make a good job of destroying alder furniture. They tend to hang in the air when they fly.
Habitat:
Red alder lumber.
