Field Notes

Description:

A type of greenhood orchid. P. nutans orchids can grow in extensive, often dense colonies. This species has a basal rosette of three to six leaves and produces a single green, hooded flower on a 30 cm stalk between July and October.

Habitat:

Dry sclerophyll bushland. Favors moist sheltered areas in open forest, woodland on a variety of soils.

Notes:

All Pterostylis species use small male wasps or gnats for germination, by producing a pheromone similar to that of the females.

I think there are 32 species of pterostylis in Tasmania, so I suspect that we've got a few more species to find since they may take as many as eight years between flowering. But even just 5 species would be pretty good for 15 acres.
