Argiope luzona
15.456, 119.922
Field Notes
Description:
Argiope luzona (Walckenaer, 1841). I went out to our backyard, this morning, to check on the egg sacs and hatchling spiders of this female. As I approached the web, I immediately saw that she had produced a different web decoration. This amazing spider has been in my backyard for several weeks and every single morning I have seen a new Four-arm Continuous Cruciate Stabilimentum (the arms connect at the hub) or a Four-arm Discontinuous Cruciate Stabilimentum (the arms do not connect at the hub). There have been short, sharp looking zig-zag arms or long fuzzy looking zig-zag arms, but she has always produced Four-arm decorations. Today, she suddenly surprised me with a rare Five-arm Discontinuous Cruciate Stabilimentum. I have only ever seen one Five-arm web decoration prior to this one and that was a Continuous example. It can be seen at https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/113310745
Habitat:
This female Argiope luzona was spotted in our backyard. Her web was moored on a banana plant.
Notes:
This is the female Argiope luzona which has recently been featured in some other spottings concerning her egg sacs and hatchling spiders -
