Field Notes

Description:

I think this is a "Striated Pardalote" but the colors are not right?

Habitat:

During breeding season, Striated Pardalotes form pairs or small groups of up to six birds. The nest is constructed close to the ground, usually in a tree hollow or tunnel, excavated in an earthen bank; small openings in human-made objects are frequently used. The birds display regularly at the entrance to the nesting chamber, and vigorously guard the vicinity against other pardalotes.

Notes:

I think he was protecting his nest in the embankment at the beach. Photo 4..

The difference is this: melanocephalus has a yellow loral patch and uropygialis has red one (as in your picture).
Thanks Leuba.. We had a very cold week here too.. One night it came down to -3C but the days are nice and warm. I have added one more photo. it is not clear but you can see the head..
Lovely series, Christiane ! makes me feel so warm in freezing Melbourne. I think you are right about it being a "Striated Pardalote" -colours match. I believe there are at least four races with the crown being either plain black or streaked. did you see the top of the head ?
