Field Notes

Description:

A small terrestrial greenhood orchid. Like most of the greenhood orchids it has a false "window" which confuses its pollinators and causes them to wander around the interior of the flower for longer before getting out again. This increases the likelihood pollen getting both in and out of the flower.

Habitat:

Dry sclerophyll bushland

Notes:

This stand of Maroonhoods grows in shallow club-moss covered soils on top of semi-exposed mudstone.
