Field Notes

Description:

Some sort of gourd on a vine. They are about the size of a pingpong ball & turn orangish-red & smell bad

Habitat:

Central Texas woodland

Species ID Suggestions

Cowitch vine

Cissus incisa

Lindheimer's globeberry, Balsam gourd, Globe berry, Snake apple

Ibervillea lindheimeri

It's probably Calabazilla or Buffalo Gourd, Cucurbita foetidissima, but the leaves look more deeply cut than is typical. The plants certainly smell bad. http://www.wnmu.edu/academic/nspages/gilaflora/cucurbita_foetidissima.html
Look like a fruit of Cucumber/Gourd's family. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cucurbitaceae In India we see similar Fruit called Malabar Gourd.
This looks like a Coccinia but I'm not sure of the species...
