Field Notes

Description:

Brown chicken like bird with long squared tail. Wide black band near tip of tail, tuft of feathers on head, black "ruffs" on sides of neck.

Habitat:

Spotted near the Tamarac Discovery Center. Common bird of the deep woods. Often seen near aspen trees feeding on tree buds.

Notes:

Non-migrator bird. During the winter will dive into snowbanks to spend the night. Grouse have feathers on feet in winter to serve as snowshoes. In spring, males stand on logs and drum wings to attract females.
