Field Notes

Description:

Black wasp with white ring around its abdomen, a white spot on its thorax, and white spots on its "shoulders". The male has a white spot on its face, the female does not. Both can sting but they are not aggressive and sting only if threatened.

Habitat:

They build their nests in abandoned holes made by Carpenter Bees, Mud Dobbers, etc.

Notes:

The Four-tooth Mason Wasp is sometimes mistaken for the Bald-Faced Hornet.
Beneficial insect to have in the garden as they use the leaf-rolling caterpillar to feed to their larvae.
