Field Notes

Description:

Orange splotches surround a row of eyespots on a background of dark brown on the upper wings. The forewing underwing has the similar pattern, but the hindwing has neither eyespots nor orange.

Habitat:

Wildflower meadows in the subalpine on Blackwall Peak, Manning Park, BC in the Cascade Mountains. This is endemic to the Cascades and Coast Mountain ranges and only found in the Pacific Northwest.

Notes:

Named after a Russian sea captain who collected one of the first of these that was to become the type specimen. Butterflies of BC by Acorn and Sheldon.

Yes this was pretty exciting for me because I knew I was going to find the ID when I had such a good look at it and photos of both sides. Not many of my butterfly subjects have been as cooperative!
nice to get pictures of both the top wing view and side wing view...it's very helpful for identification purposes
