Field Notes

Description:

A small and very furry cup moth in orange, white and tan with an interesting closed section in the antennae (male). With wings closed it was about 15mm long.

Habitat:

Resting on the front of a vehicle in a used car yard under very strong night lights.

Notes:

Orange cup moth. The caterpillar of these, unlike so many Limacodids, has no spines or dramatic colouring or tufts and spines. Instead it seems to be a leaf mimic. Still a 'slug-foot, it is dorso-ventrally flat, plain green, wider at the middle and pointy at both ends with a vein down the centre...... check this http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/lima/transvestita1.jpg
Now I'm determined to find some of the catties.
