Field Notes

Description:

Another Exidia species found in our oak forest, first in the series. This one takes an irregular shape of a gelatinous, dark-brown to black, lump protruding through a deep layer of old moss on a large log discarded in the forest. The lump is very jelly-like, shaky on touch, and appears covered in wart-like bumps. This lump was about 10 to 12 cm large, some 5cm deep, and about the same in height.

Habitat:

One of three Exidia species, recently found on deadwood scattered on forest floor, in a lowland broadleaved (mainly oak and birch) forest, in Geneva lake valley. This one was clearly protruding from the thick layer of moss covering the bark of a large decaying llog.

Notes:

I can only hope that my ID down to the genus was right - I'm getting a bit confused about the identification of these fungi, and find that there is not much about them in terms of literature...
