Field Notes

Description:

Ospreys prey on fish and habitually nest near bodies of water. This mother osprey encircled her nest and periodically called out "cheereek!" (because she didn't like my presence!).

Habitat:

Seen in Allegany State Park. Lives near coastlines, rivers, lakes, etc. This raptor is present on every continent but Antarctica.

Notes:

Listed as a species of special concern in New York State; it was previously listed as endangered in the 1970s, then threatened until 1999 due to the deleterious effects of DDT pesticides on its eggs.
