Hummingbird Clearwing Moth
Hemaris thysbe
41.572, -73.2218
Field Notes
Description:
This moth looked like it was about 100 years old. I spotted it early this morning resting on bee balm in a garden. It was definitely alive, but was moving very slowly. Usually, hummingbird moths are very fast and although their appearance is variable, their thorax is generally olive in color dorsally and pale yellow ventrally. Their abdomens are usually dark burgundy dorsally and ventrally with light olive/dark golden patches dorsally. Wings are mostly clear with reddish brown terminal borders.
Habitat:
Spotted on Bee Balm in a rural garden.
