Blue jay
Cyanocitta cristata
29.4444, -98.4814
Field Notes
Description:
Large bird with blue, black, and white markings. It has a black hooked bill, black eyes and legs. It has a long rounded tail.
Habitat:
This bird was found in my front yard by a feeder.
Habitat: forests, woodlands, urban and rural areas.
Notes:
Fun Facts: 1. Blue jays mimic the sounds of Red shouldered hawks. 2. The oldest recorded Blue jay was just shy of 27 years old. Sadly it died from being caught in a fishing net. :( 3. Blue jays practice "anting". They rub the ants on their feathers, thus causing the ants to secrete a substance that jays don't find appealing. Once the substance is secreted they are thought to be more digestible to the jay.
