Field Notes

Description:

Small and brightly coloured typical kingfisher, azure-blue above and bright rufous bellow.

Habitat:

Here observed in rural setting, but very close to habitations, and in paddy fields as they are getting prepared and flooded for the shrimp cultivation.

Notes:

The interesting thing for me was that I tried real hard to see this kingfisher in Europe, and I managed a couple of times - but have never gotten a decent pic... This place here must be a Kingfisher (machhranga in Bengali or Bangla) paradise, as I see them (three different species) almost every day and almost everywhere...

A belated congratulations Zlatan! Thank you for sharing :)
Congrats Zlatan on your sotd. Lovely series of a fantastic bird.
Congratulations, Zlatan. This is a wonderful SOTD, and it's interesting to read that you're seeing them just about every day. The expression "When it rains, it pours" comes to mind.
Thank you all, both for SDOTD and your kind comments. Cheers

Congratulations Zlatan, your Eurasian kingfisher is our Spotting of the Day: "Spotting of the Day! We love this image of an Eurasian kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), with the bird's bright blue plumage contrasting with a more subdued background of paddies. This small kingfisher has a very broad distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. Eurasian kingfishers are important indicators of freshwater health, with the highest densities of breeding birds found in habitats with clear water needed for prey visibility".
