Description:

About an 25 mm long. Hairy body with black and rusty-orange colored stripes. Wings are black.

Habitat:

Open grassy area with many wild flower and other large wasp species.

Male velvet ant (family Mutillidae) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutillidae The males don't have stingers so they can't sting you - but from personal experience some of them can give you quite a bite.
