Thank you for all the help and ID valgaavmiko, Jemma and bayucca! P.S. Havent seen Ralphie in a while..wonder where he's gone off to?
Trichoptera, Limnophilidae, Halesus sp. and looks for me like being Halesus digitatus, which is very similar to Halesus radiatus. Please, verify! http://www.biopix-foto.de/halesus-digitatus_photo-87181.aspx First picture is in my eyes Digitatus and there is a wrong ID of one as Digitatus as well, but I think that one is Radiatus: http://www.naturamediterraneo.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=63605 http://www.biopix.net/halesus-digitatus_photo-61513.aspx http://www.insektenbox.de/sonsti/haldigm1.htm http://www.biopix-foto.de/halesus-digitatus_photo-87178.aspx Halesus radiatus: More pronounced "radiated" pattern at the forewings and other markings at the top margins as well: http://www.flickr.com/photos/93372558@N00/4296750869/ This is in my eyes also Radiatus not Digitatus if you look at the mentioned markings: http://insectmacros.com/index.php/sobi-menu/trichoptera-caddisflies/halesus-digitatus.html http://www.naturespot.org.uk/species/halesus-radiatus Quite a new and interesting experience for me to check caddisflies ;-)... How is Ralphie going??
Im not sure Jemma, I can have a closer look at the photos tonight.
in pic 2 I can see a curled up proboscis.
spur on the legs, prominent eyeballs, the way it folds its wings, tent like, all point to a Caddisfly. Which also means that the water quality is good.
Caddisfly. Did it have a proboscis?
I don't have a very good insect field guide, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
It's a caddisfly, Order Trichoptera. Britain has 199 native species. I think they're like the lacewings though and you can't really tell them apart unless you're looking closely at the wing veins. Here is a site of the some of the native species. http://www.naturespot.org.uk/taxonomy/term/19486
