Description:
The oxlip is a herbaceous, perennial plant from Primulaceae family, and some 25 to 30 cm tall. It produces a basal rosette of leaves, appearing as being folded and refolded... It sports a single stem, some 15cm tall, with a cluster of 5 to 10 light yellow flowers.
Habitat:
The Oxlip is native to Europe, and thrive in nutrient-poor and calcium-rich damp woods and meadows. Here, we, my son and I, observed it on boggy shores of a small lake and on edges of coniferous forest of Jura mountain range (Wildlife Park). The lake in question is Lamoura, of glacial origin and the highest altitude lake in this range (some 1200m).
Notes:
I was a bit surprised to find out, from various sources, about the edibility and culinary uses of this plant - it seems that leaves and flowers can be used as salad, or cooked onto soups or stews...
