Field Notes

Description:

10-12 millimeters long, abdomen black with pale bands, thorax and head covered in gray or brown hair.

Habitat:

Many individuals nesting in the soil in our front yard. The one bee out of its burrow was imaged on a paving stone in our back yard. Suburban residential neighborhood in small town on western fringe of eastern deciduous forest.

Notes:

These are among the first native, solitary bees of spring. Their window of activity is very short, typically 3 weeks. Males emerge first and fly ceaselessly over areas where they expect females to emerge.
