Description:
Viceroy Butterfly raised from a caterpillar indoors. This was just before I released it back outside. Apologies for the poorly-lit photos. :(
Habitat:
Rural deciduous area, Clermont County
Notes:
Fun fact: This butterfly is often mistaken for a Monarch butterfly, but is actually not even related. It is believed that they evolved to mimic Monarchs to keep predators away, since Monarchs are either distasteful or poisonous to most insectivores. You can tell the difference between Viceroys and Monarchs by the horizontal black vein across the middle of the hindwing.
