Field Notes

Description:

Green (at least two shades), blue, red and black...by far the most colourful bird I regularly see.

Habitat:

A snag refers to a standing, dead or dying tree, often missing a top ...this Kadamba (Neolamarckia cadamba) tree planted by me 30 years ago is a snag and a bird magnet. I saw this bird on another snag (Coconut) quite far away and took a few snaps at top zoom...when suddenly it simply flew to rest on a flowering tree opposite the Kadamba snag and within moments was hammering away at it! It was almost as if it 'knew' the location of the dead Kadamba tree.

Notes:

I have a video too, which I am finding difficult to upload because of my temperamental computer. Maybe later.

The link has worked perfectly. Another wonderful spotting :)
@ Neil Ross http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/656166145 It is a PN link....one of my spottings. When I copied it and pasted in new window...it worked. Fingers crossed.
Birds are the most amazing animals, and such characters. Think link to your woodpecker spotting hasn't worked - says page doesn't exist. Yes, snags are awesome :)
Thank you Neil, Yes, hammering away...but it has competition from an actual Woodpecker...same tree by the way. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/... And a few days later I noticed the base of the tree was covered with wood chips...I had never really realized that these birds can make bits of wood chips go flying... and in forests maybe other animals may collect these to line nests. Hmmm I think I like the Aussie version of snag.:)
Lovely bird, Sukanya, and great spotting. It looks like a woodpecker (not that I've ever seen one, mind you), and you say it was hammering away at the tree? I'll check out the link. PS: In Australia, a snag is aka a sausage... on the BBQ. lol
