Description:

Ghost Plant, AKA Indian Pipe or Corpse Plant, spotted along a hiking trail in the Willamette National Forest, near Fall Creek, Oregon.

Notes:

I thought this was a fungus at the time I photographed it. However, it is a unique type of plant which lacks chlorophyll.

Hi SargonR, this cool looking thing you have found is actually a type of plant! Monotropa uniflora (commonly called Indian Pipe, or Ghost Plant) is a really interesting plant. It lacks chlorophyll (what makes plants green). The plants live off of fungi that grow on the roots of certain trees. What you see here are the flowers coming up. You will need to move this spotting to the Plants category and out of the Mushroom Mapping mission.
