Thanks for the suggestion. You're right that the males do have red caps I just didn't get a photo of any of them. I actually think this might be a Hairy Woodpecker - the range fits, a bit bigger that the Downy, & a spur of black at the collar bone. I'll try spotting them again to confirm my theory (I have a better lens now too)
Or a Downie Woodpecker female (with no red cap.)
