This is a beaver, I think, or a muskrat (must see the tail to know for sure)..
Nutria were intentionally introduced to North America (from South America), with the intent of "farming" them for fur and meat. The name "Nutria" was coined to imply that their flesh was nutritious.
So much like our beavers and muskrats.
