Field Notes

Description:

So happy to find these cats on our one and only Milkweed. I had watched an adult oviposit eggs the day before and while looking for the eggs, I noticed a half dozen cats in various stages of development. First image is of the oldest, the third is of the youngest and the last image is of an egg.

Habitat:

Milkweed in the backyard.

Notes:

A female ovipositing can be seen at my other spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/491026002

Here's a website that has lots of links to distributors...may be some help to you! I hope you can find some plants! http://monarchwatch.org/bring-back-the-monarchs/resources/plant-seed-suppliers
Thank you Luis and Christy! Sadly this is the only Milkweed plant I have been able to find at any nearby nursery. This plant is still quite small and I'm afraid it won't be enough for all of the hungry, hungry caterpillars. I'll keep looking but you'd think that nurseries would supply more with the Monarchs on the decline. :(
LOVE this, Cindy!! I'm from Minnesota originally and totally miss them!! We found them all the time on milkweed...watched them change into beautiful butterflies! I hear their numbers are down everywhere...I'm glad you are seeing them!!
