Field Notes

Description:

Also called the Saddleback Tamarin, this small monkey (about the size of a smaller squirrel) is a reddish brown in color with a dark brown, nearly black mantle over the shoulders and upper back. The head and neck areas as well as the feet and last 2/3 of the tail are black. The muzzle is also dark which makes it easy to differentiate from other tamarins which have a lighter colored snout.

Habitat:

As these monkeys are diurnal, they are often observed moving as a group in the treetops, sometimes coming down to investigate. They can be easily called to a reasonably close distance. They eat fruit, insect, and eggs when they can get them. They are common throughout the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador and much of the Northern Amazon jungle. This one was seen on the edge of a clearing near a village.

Notes:

These monkeys become very brave until suddenly they get scared or scare themselves, then they all take off through the trees. Funny to watch as they play. There is a link for an excellent guide to the monkeys of Ecuador in the reference box on the right. It is a pdf download.
