Field Notes

Description:

Salamis cacta, the Lilac Mother-of-Pearl or Lilac Beauty, is a butterfly in the Nymphalidae family.

I was lucky to see this, as adults usually fly in the forest canopy, but may descend to suck at damp patches or to settle in the undergrowth.

Habitat:

Seen on the veranda of a cottage in a clearing in an primary forest in Uganda.
The habitat consists of forests, including disturbed forest habitats.

Notes:

Last photo shows the habitat.

Yes, well maybe I saw it in the wrong light! Thanks Daniele for all your help...
I guess it all depends on the angle from which you're looking at it with the iridescence... but common names can be very arbitrary :-)
Hahah Daniele! Someones having a joke here... How did that get called lilac!?
