Field Notes

Description:

Small dayflying moth, measuring about 50 mm. Its long proboscis and its hovering behaviour, accompanied by a humming noise, make it look like a hummingbird while feeding on flowers.

Habitat:

Gardens, parks, meadows, bushes, woodland edge.

Notes:

Its visual abilities have been much studied and it has been shown to have a good ability to learn colours.
