Field Notes

Description:

There are various creatures which make burrows similar to these and it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish a rat's hole from one made by a frog. However, if you see several holes, in close proximity to each other and they are in or around a rice field, in the Philippines, it is almost certain that you are looking at the burrows of Freshwater Crabs from the Subfamily Parathelphusinae.

Habitat:

These Freshwater Crab Burrows were spotted in a rice field which is completely parched at this time of year, the peak of the dry season.

Notes:

If you would like to see the kind of crab that creates these burrows, you can look at my spotting - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/938736184...
