Description:

ant, 1cm, parasitized by a type of fungi, single strand about 2cm tall

Habitat:

tropical forest

Notes:

I spotted this amazing specimen in Golden Stream Corridor Preserve. I have never seen a parasitic fungus like this. I saw 4 other examples of insects infected with fungi while in Belize.

Thanks Christine, I was thinking Cordyceps sp, unfortunately I do not know the species of ant. Thanks also maple moth.

Looks like it could be Cordyceps sp. or Ophiocordyceps sp. They can be host specific - do you know the species of ant?
