Field Notes

Description:

A solitary chubby fungus which looked like spectacular rustgill from above and side but gills look very different to me. About 50mm tall and wide. Growing in a thick carpet of moss.

Habitat:

Under mixed native and exotis trees in a local nature reserve.

Notes:

Yet to search for this. Gym somethingelse? Cort with large free gills? For Gymnopilus junonius compare here http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/27943007

Thanks RandyL.. I'll check the local gyms more thoroughly.
I agree it's a Gymnopilus, not sure on the species though.
Thanks for the suggestion Sanjay however a few of problems exist. The colour seems wrong, the gills seem very different (these are 'free' or 'notched', fewer or more open, and most importantly, that species is not recorded in Australia.
