Field Notes

Description:

Enclosed in rigid armor since only their fins, eyes, and mouth are movable. The body is blackish brown with white dots.

Habitat:

Found in reefs and shallow waters.

Notes:

Most boxfishes when stressed, can secrete a toxic slime from the thin layer of skin covering the carapace. The principal poison, Ostracitoxin, is not know to affect humans.
