Field Notes

Description:

About 2 cm long, typical representative of Gerridae family: narrow elongated body with four hind legs very long and thin; and short and stubby forelegs, which are used to hold the prey; and a sharp rostrum, used to pierce and suck the prey.

Habitat:

Here, seen on a semi-stagnating water of a local marshland; (protected marshlands or Maraîs de Bidonne), in lowlands around lake Geneva (lac Leman), between Alps and Jura mountain ranges.

Notes:

Both photos show mating.
