Field Notes

Description:

Easily recognized small white heron; who, when breeding develops golden to orange 'flushes' of rusty-coloured feathers.

Habitat:

Here observed in large numbers on a nesting ground and during nesting season - possible to see eggs and nests on pics 3 and 4. Nesting ground is a marsh (pic 6) in a Port Harcourt, one of the bigger towns in Nigeria.

Notes:

Mixed flocks of egrets and herons, Cattle egret and Night heron the most numerous, followed by Striated and Western Reef herons; and some other birds (Whistling ducks, Reed Cormorant, moorhens...)
