Field Notes

Description:

Around 2cm long, with overall dark colouration. Head and protonum are a shiny bronze and the short elytra shine in green/blue hues; the abdomen is black with an orange patch on the tip. This colouration could be aposematic, as some species of this family (Staphylinidae) are able to release noxious chemicals/toxins as a defense. The short wing cases mean that the beetle must fold its wings in order to tuck them away, which is achieved using the flexible exposed abdomen.

Habitat:

Found in rainforest around Lake Eacham, on the Atherton Tablelands.

Thanks for your comment, Mark. Those tropical ones display some amazing colours!
Nice colors on this one. Ours (further south) are mostly boring by comparison.
