Field Notes

Description:

This is a small diving duck, of some 40 to 45cm in length. Breeding male dark brown back, neck, chest and head; with white or whitish belly and flanks. Non-breeding male and females somewhat paler brown bellies and flanks. Breeding male also sports a longer brown crest, which is barely a tuft in other plumages.

Habitat:

Here seen in Geneva harbor, on lake Leman, end of the winter.
