Field Notes

Description:

The shape of the orange patch on the thorax, the two tufts at the end of the abdomen, the antennae, and the wing color all distinguish H. americana from other similar species.

Notes:

In addition to this species, there are at least three other species of moths that look remarkably similar: the Virginia Ctenucha (http://bugguide.net/node/view/7773), Yellow-collared Scape Moth (http://bugguide.net/node/view/447), and Clemens' False Skeletonizer (http://bugguide.net/node/view/12970). BugGuide gives some good characteristics to separate each of them, and with some focus, eventually one ID shines through.
