Congrats Greg on SOTD! Certainly an engineering and architectural marvel. So much could be learned from this one picture alone.

Wow! Thank you rangers & Daniele for SOTD. It is amazing & beautiful the construction that the little guys can do.
Congratulations Greg, your Bald-faced Hornet's nest is our Spotting of the Day! "Our Spotting of the Day is an impressive nest that belongs to Bald-faced Hornets (Dolichovespula maculata)! Found in the USA and southern Canada, the bald-faced hornet is not a true hornet (genus Vespa), but a species of yellowjacket wasp. Bald-faced hornets are best known for building large hanging papery nests which they will defend aggressively. The nest's amazing paper envelope is created by collecting and chewing wood fiber into a paste which is then built into shape. The paper cover hides and protects several suspended combs containing chambers for the hornet's larvae. This spotting is one of over 8,600 spottings found in our mission "Nests, hives, bowers, webs & other animal architecture", originally created by Project Noah ranger Ava Torre-Bueno.
