Field Notes

Habitat:

This June Beetle was spotted, in our front garden, on a Red hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Linn.), known as Gomamela in the Philippines. Plant information from http://www.stuartxchange.org/Gumamela.html......

Notes:

Coleoptera; Scarabaeoidea; Melolonthinae; Carlschoenherria. The June beetle shown here is one of the six species, from the Genus Carlschoenherria, which are present in the Philippines. The scientific paper which describes these beetles is in https://www.researchgate.net/publication...... I was really finding it difficult to identify this beetle, but the paper shows great photos of all six species and,, perhaps more importantly, there is a really good distribution map. To make the map easy to understand, each species is assigned its own symbol. So, once I had looked at all six species and picked the one that looked like my photos, I looked at the map and there it was. The symbol for the species, that looked like mine. was stamped all over the part of the Philippines where I live and no other symbols were anywhere near this area. As far as my search for an identification was concerned, it was "case closed". However, since I had already downloaded the scientific paper, I read through the whole thing and it is just full of interesting stuff.
