Field Notes

Description:

An orchid from northern Eurasia first recorded in North America in the 1800's. Grows from a rhizome and may exist underground for up to 10 years before sending up a flower stock. Opposing leaves up the stock to multiple blooms. The top of the stock droops over when the buds are forming and then straightens as the flowers open.

Habitat:

Pacific temperate rain forest of fir, hemlock, big-leaf maple, red alder, and a few birch. Understory of Oregon grape, sword fern, and vanilla leaf.

Notes:

Many areas consider this orchid an invasive plant but so far it is still uncommon in our forest.
