Field Notes

Description:

About 5 mm long, with a horizontal black stripe across the posterior part of its elytra. Also has various small black spots on its elytra.

Habitat:

Standing water in a wheelbarrow.

Notes:

This beetle is in the family Dytiscidae. It's a pioneer species, so it's the first to colonize new habitats, which explains why it decided to populate a temporary pool of water in a wheelbarrow. It feeds on small aquatic organisms, such as mosquito larvae, making it a great addition to any aquatic habitat. For more information about this species and where it was found, see this blog: http://normalbiology.blogspot.com/2011/08/aquatic-beetles-in-wheelbarro….
