Field Notes

Description:

A large praying mantis that I found on my front porch in the cold. It was barely moving so I thought that it was going to freeze to death. I brought it inside and set up a cage for it immediately. After much hesitation and a few bites (ouch) he finally walked into the cage. Looks like I got a little more preparation to do before he becomes my new pet! UPDATE- sadly she died shortly after laying one egg clutch but I got babies to look forward to

That was very nice of you to attempt rescue of this beautiful mantid. They do last pretty late into the season. I am not sure how long they live, but there are some decent resources online for care of mantids and some even have estimated lifespans of different species. This looks like a Chinese Mantid with that coloration and body shape. Take a look at the link I provided with my ID suggestion to compare. Good luck!
