Field Notes

Description:

Bright purple plant (possibly a sapling) with thorny bristles and a small flower

Habitat:

Wind-whipped rocky outcropping (Bearfence Mountain, Shenandoah National Park)

Notes:

Its bright purple color attracted us to this otherwise lifeless twig (we thought it had been spray painted) but upon further inspection we discovered its small budding flowers. Please help us identify it. Thanks!
