Field Notes

Description:

The Mini Schnauzer, who resembles his cousins, the Giant and Standard Schnauzers in everything but size, originates from Germany. This breed was developed in the 1890's by crossing smaller specimens of the Standard Schnauzer with the Miniature Pinscher or the Affenpinscher. His main function was originally barnyard ratter. However, most are now cherished family pets. The breed was imported to North America in 1925, but did not gain popularity until the 1940's. In 1946, a Miniature Schnauzer won Best in Show at a popular dog show, and he has been a popular breed since that time. His size makes him a good choice for any size home, and his exercise needs are served by a daily walk.
