Field Notes

Description:

Small fly, 4 mm long. Family Ephydridae (the Shore Flies).

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters. About 200 meters from a Mountain Wetland.

Notes:

The Shore Flies are of a large Family of usually small, drab flies that are common near water: lakes, ponds, streams, wetlands etc. In many species, the larvae are leaf miners.

Thank you Simona, I think you are right about the Family. However, this one is a red-brown color and has banding on the wings. Hydrellia griseola is brown and lacks any coloring on the wings. I haven't yet found any Ephydrids that match this one.
