Description:
Green birds, at least one foot long, each with a dark neck ring and a reddish-orange beak.
Habitat:
Suburban area on a mesic, tropical, insular lowland plateau.
Notes:
Spotted perched in a koa (Acacia koa) tree. Length was estimated based on comparison to the size of adjacent koa leaves, which tend to be about six inches long.
When I got up this morning I heard a lot of loud, unfamiliar squawking. I looked out a window and caught glimpses birds flying through the trees. Because the sun was behind them, they were en silhouette so I could not see any details, but the sight brought back memories of scenes from old "jungle" movies. I decided to investigate.
I went into my backyard and I could still hear the squawking. Trying to locate the source, I looked up into the koa tree and saw three of them. I managed to acquire the uploaded images before, with (naturally!) loud squawks, the birds flew off.
This species is not native to Hawaii, but apparently escaped pets have managed to establish feral populations.
