Field Notes

Description:

Large, dragonfly-sized flying insect. Light tawny/greenish tan colour, appears to have two or four clear thin wings. Very long, thin jointed legs, long antennas.

Habitat:

I found it near my swimming pool, perhaps shows a preference for water? Suburban area with lots of landscaping and nature areas.

Notes:

About the size of my palm, vaguely resembles a cross between a giant mosquito and a dragonfly. **General consensus agrees it is a large mosquito hawk**

Wow...I've never seen a mosquito hawk before. Thanks for posting this...I learned something new today :)
I've sen them get that big, especially near my house. They get huge. I agree it is probably a mosquito hawk
I think it had four, and when it eventually flew away it flew in a skittering motion like a mosquito hawk. However, I've never seen them get so large as this was... 3-3.5 inches long (including legs).
The photo is a bit blurry, so I can't tell if it has two or four wings. If it has four wings, it's probably a Mosquito hawk, if it has two wings, it's probably a type of Crane fly.
