Field Notes

Description:

Bumble bee on a flower.

Habitat:

Field, rocky habitat.

Notes:

It was a chilly day, so I was able to get close to the bumble bee. The cold rendered it unable to fly, and I touched its back, to which it raised one of its legs in reply. I assume it was telling me "Hey, stop that!" The flower it's on is also unidentified.

I love observing bumble bees on chilly mornings. Great photos. If you're interested in a pocket guide to some bumble bee species, check out the guides to the rusty-patched and yellowbanded bumble bees on the Xerces website here: http://www.xerces.org/identification-guides/. Those guides will cover most of the eastern bumble bees you're likely to encounter. Enjoy! :)
